Toy storage, kids' closets, labels, and nursery systems that children can actually keep up.

How to choose kids' storage that children will use

Kids keep a system when it is at their height, has few categories and lets them dump things back in seconds. Open bins beat lidded boxes, front-facing shelves beat spine-out bookcases, and picture labels beat words for anyone under seven. Our guide to toy storage organizers covers the bin sizes that work, and labeling systems shows how to make the categories stick.

Anchor every tall unit to the wall, avoid heavy lids on toy chests, and rotate: keep a third of the toys in a closed bin in the closet and swap monthly. Fewer things in reach means less to put away, which is the whole trick. For clothes, a low rod and drawer dividers let a child dress alone (see kids' closet systems).
